Newcastle’s Stephenson Quarter is a high-profile development site being taken forward by Stephenson Works LLP, a joint venture between PfP igloo and Newcastle City Council. The site has been divided into a number of plots which are to be redeveloped in order to create a mixed use scheme incorporating office space, business start-up, residential, food and beverage, and community spaces.
Phase 1 has been successfully completed, and BBUK are part of the design team working on Phase 2 which includes AHMM, Turner.Works, Coffey Architects, Elliot Wood and Black and White Engineering.
Our landscape strategy responded to the various sites in the masterplan with the creation of three formal squares that acknowledge the plots history by incorporating surviving architectural and engineering elements. In contrast a lush garden area provides a more intimate green space, whilst a largely self-sown hanging garden will be enhanced and made accessible with a boardwalk. A variety of roof gardens are proposed for private residents, public bars and restaurants, outdoor fitness areas and allotments.
