Duncombe Square

YORK - COMPLETED

Shortlisted: Housing Design Award (Project) 2022

Duncombe Square is a 52-home net-zero carbon development in York designed by Mikhail Riches for City of York Council. The project transforms a complex brownfield site formerly used as a barracks and MOD training ground.

BBUK’s landscape was planned with sustainability in mind, with low car parking and an emphasis on excellent travel routes for cycling and walking as well as cycle storage facilities. The site offers both natural play spaces for children along with communal growing areas and a relaxing recreational space. Homes feature shared gardens designed with grow beds to encourage community growing, and tree-lined streets create a welcoming and sustainable neighbourhood.

Engaging with local communities was key to developing the plans which delivers a walkable local neighbourhood built in harmony with their surroundings and adhering to the latest environmental standards.
