White Collar Factory

LONDON 2017

Winner: BCO Test of Time Award 2023

Winner: New London Award, Wellbeing 2018

Winner: RIBA National Award, 2018

Winner: BCO Innovation Award 2018

Working with AHMM for Derwent, BBUK designed the courtyard spaces associated with a new office building in Old Street, London.

Evergreen trees form a corridor of green through the space and were chosen specifically to attenuate the wind. These are underplanted with predominantly native perennials, shrubs and bulbs to form a seasonal, wildlife friendly urban garden in a very built-up part of the city.

The courtyard forms part of a new pedestrian connection through the site, from Old Street through to Mallow Street on the western boundary.  New loose furniture compliments fixed benches placed under the trees and ‘Network’ a sculpture by Thomas J Price watches over the space.

In 2023 the scheme won the BCO Test of Time Award, which revisits previous recipients of BCO National Awards, White Collar Factory having won the Innovation Award in 2018.
