Burnhome & Duncombe Barracks

YORK - POST PLANNING

Shortlisted: Housing Design Award (Project) 2022

BBUK are part of the multi-disciplinary design team, led by Mikhail Riches working on the Burnhome and Duncombe Barracks sites for The City of York Council as part of their ground-breaking Housing Delivery Programme to achieve Passivhaus zero carbon housing at scale.

Burnhome, located to the east of the city centre includes 85 new homes arranged with traffic calming measures as a single loop. Biodiversity has played a large part in how we developed the public spaces, and a community garden lies at the heart of the scheme, providing a safe place for children to play and people to meet.

The Duncombe Barracks development includes 28 new homes and is planned with sustainability in mind, with low car parking and an emphasis on excellent travel routes for cycling and walking as well as cycle storage facilities. The site offers both natural play spaces for children along with communal growing areas and a relaxing recreational space.

Engaging with local communities has been key to developing the plans on both sites which offer a mix of affordable and outright sale homes, are low carbon, walkable, beautiful, local neighbourhoods built in harmony with their surroundings, and adhering to the latest environmental standards.
