Abode was Phase 1 of the Great Kneighton development comprising 650 new homes designed by Proctor and Matthews on the southern fringe of Cambridge with 40% affordable housing throughout. The landscaping was designed to create a clear sense of identity and hierarchy to the streets, public realm and open spaces surrounding the new homes. The central focal point is a public square with a bosquet and mass plantings of cornus grass. Sustainable urban drainage has been incorporated throughout with the use of rain gardens and porous paving.
Since its completion Abode has been cited in government design guidance, including the National Design Guide and Code, and Building for a Healthy Life.
